Pertamina Hulu Rokan Steps Towards Renewable Energy with Solar Power

On May 28, 2024, PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), a key branch of PT Pertamina’s upstream subholding, has made significant strides towards renewable energy by incorporating a solar power plant (SPP) into their operational activities. Spread over 28 hectares, the startling array of 64,000 solar panels marks Pertamina Group’s firm commitment to cutting emissions and embracing new, renewable energy sources.

This initiative is a collaborative venture involving the Sub Holding Power & New Renewable Energy, Pertamina NRE, and the upstream subholding, Pertamina Hulu Energy. Occupying a strategic spot across the oil and gas operational areas of Rumbai, Duri, and Dumai, this 25 Megawatt Peak (MWp) solar power facility stands as a testament to the industry’s move towards sustainable energy solutions.

Indonesia Renewable Energy with Solar Power

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, highlights the company’s leadership role in energy transition. With this solar panel project in the PHR complex, Pertamina is demonstrating the potential of renewable energy in enhancing business operations within the Rokan working area. This move is aligned with broader objectives aiming at greener and more sustainable industrial practices.

The Rokan SPP initiative represents Pertamina’s dedication to contributing to Indonesia’s ambitious net zero emission target by 2060. By adopting environmentally friendly technologies, this solar power project is expected to significantly cut down emissions by up to 23,000 tons of CO2 annually and reduce natural gas fuel usage by approximately 352 million metric standard cubic feet (MMSCF) per year. Such eco-conscious practices are projected to realize annual savings up to US$4.3 million, underscoring the economic viability of renewable energy sources.

“Today, the solar power plant stands operational, supporting Indonesia’s energy resilience,” Santoso concludes.

Pertamina, leading the way in energy transition, is committed to the Net Zero Emission 2060 goal, actively promoting initiatives that contribute directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts are in line with the global movement towards Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) standards in all business operations and sectors, cementing the company’s dedication to sustainable development.
