Indonesian Startup Aruna Champions Sustainable Tuna Stocks for the Future

In the island nation of Indonesia, the homegrown integrated fisheries startup Aruna has made a steadfast commitment to safeguarding the sustainability of the country’s tuna stocks. As a major world player in the tuna market, Indonesia has a crucial role in ensuring the vitality of these fish populations. This pledge aligns with the annual observance of World Tuna Day celebrated each May.

Utari Octavianty, who co-founded Aruna and serves as its Chief of Sustainability, pointed out that World Tuna Day, recognized in the first week of May (specifically on the 2nd), acts as a vital reminder of the need to preserve one of the most preferred sources of animal protein. “The day also seeks to spark public awareness of the need for tuna fishing practices that don’t harm future populations,” Utari said in a press announcement on Wednesday.

As the largest provider of tuna globally, Indonesia’s output in 2023 hit an impressive 1.5 million tons, translating into an export value of around $927.2 million as released by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

Indonesia’s tuna has garnered an impressive share of 19.1% in the global market, bound for various countries, including but not limited to the United States, Italy, Japan, Vietnam, Australia, and Singapore.

The rich variety of tuna roaming the Indonesian waters shows the nation’s strong position in the tuna market. The delectable tuna meat, combined with how easily it can be prepared, has made it a go-to choice for consumers around the world. Not only delicious, but tuna is also a valuable source of protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

“The consistently growing market demand for tuna reflects its significant influence year after year,” added Utari.

From the Directorate General of Product Competitiveness of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Budi Sulistiyo explained that as one of the top animal protein sources, it is essential for tuna to be managed in a manner that allows for its enjoyment both now and by future generations.

“The main approach in maintaining tuna resources is to engage in responsible fishing practices and avoid exploitation that could deplete these resources. It’s crucial for the livelihood of both fishermen and those in the fishing industry that we monitor tuna populations regularly to ensure their ongoing preservation,” detailed Budi.
