Indonesian Government Extends Incentives for Mining Exporters

The Indonesian Ministry of Trade has introduced an extension on export relaxations for various mining products valid until the close of 2024. The relaxed export regulations cater to several minerals, including laterite iron, copper, zinc, and lead concentrates, alongside anode slime.

Previously, a plan to enforce a prohibition on exporting specific products under the Trade Ministerial Regulation No. 22 of 2025 was in place to commence from June 1, 2024. However, this plan has been deferred and the updated Trade Ministerial Regulation No. 10 of 2024 has pushed the enforcement date to start from the beginning of 2025.

Budi Santoso, the Director General of Foreign Trade, expressed in a Monday press release that this easing is designed to foster the development of a robust processing and refining industry within the nation, capable of exporting enhanced mining commodities. The aim is to stimulate a reliable business environment and provide businesses with certainty.

According to Budi, easing the export regulations is part of a larger government initiative to encourage the downstreaming of mining commodities. His expectation is that the combined efforts of various stakeholders, inclusive of government sectors and commercial enterprises, will bolster the domestic industrial landscape.

In a move to align with these changes, the Ministry of Trade has also updated its former Regulation No. 23 of 2023 to the new Regulation No. 11 of 2024. This adjustment serves to offer legal and business clarity for enterprises seeking export permits.

Moreover, Budi clarified that Permendag No. 11 of 2024 does not differ substantially from its predecessor, thus allowing businesses to proceed with their permit applications as per usual practices.
