The Launch of Sea Toll Shipping in 2024 Aims to Cut Costs in Eastern Indonesia

To tackle high prices in Eastern Indonesia, the maiden voyage of the sea toll ship KM. Logistik Nusantara 3 was initiated at the BJTI Dock in Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya, in 2024.

Buyung Lalana, a special advisor to the Minister of Transportation on Inter-Agency Relations, mentioned that this sea toll program is designed to boost connectivity and reduce price discrepancies across the eastern regions of Indonesia.

“This initiative is also aimed at enhancing the development of underdeveloped, border, and remote regions (known as 3TP), enabling them to have the accessibility for economic and social activities,” Buyung stated on Tuesday (16/1/2024) in a statement from the Ministry of Transportation.

During its inaugural voyage, KM. Logistik Nusantara 3 will transport a load of 115 Teus, including essential goods such as rice, cooking oil, and sugar—77 Teus to Tidore and 38 Teus to Jailolo, Buyung Lalana explained.

According to Buyung, this inaugural sea toll voyage will help meet the demand for basic necessities, especially in the North Maluku region.

Commodities’ Prices on the Decline

“Therefore, the government, particularly the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, encourages sea toll operators to work responsibly, providing top-notch, effective, and efficient services,” Buyung noted.

Furthermore, Buyung calls for collaboration from all parties, including local governments, to maximize the provision of public services for sea freight.

Representing the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Indra Maulana highlighted the significance of the sea toll vessels, especially to communities in underdeveloped, border, and remote areas.

“Moreover, the current sea toll program not only ensures the availability of goods but has also led to a reduction in prices, with an average drop of 11 to 12 percent in the eastern regions of Indonesia,” Indra elaborated.

This initiative marks a pivotal step toward alleviating the high cost of living in Eastern Indonesia by ensuring the steady flow of essential commodities and fostering economic and social activities in less accessible regions. Through collaboration and efficient management, the sea toll program aims to create a more connected and equitable Indonesia.
